Mom always welcomed me with Arms Wide Open. When I was dating Becky, none of us had much money so I spent a lot of time with their family, probably eating them out of house and home. Mom just accommodated me…maybe she made a cup or two more rice or added more water to the soup. Whatever she did worked, since I never left hungry, though I did wonder why the rest of her children were so skinny! There was the time when Alan and I delivered a whole roasted suckling pig for Jimmy’s engagement party. I love crispy skin, so as we carrying the pig up the stairs to their home, I noticed a hind piece that seem to be hanging out of place which was begging to be snapped off and eaten. Of course, I was more than accommodating. After all, who would notice a tiny piece of missing skin? Mom did and got so agitated that she was going to give the deli owner a piece of her mind. As she started to get on the phone, I figured it was time to fess up, which I did. She looked me squarely in the eyes, smiled, said KENNY, and proceeded to cut off the broken portion for me…at least that’s how I remember it! Mom seemed to have a soft spot in her heart for me. Maybe it was because I was her ONLY son-in-law. Over the past few years, I’ve had some minor physical problems and a number of sports related injuries – more than I’ve had during the previous 60 years or so. When she talks to Becky, she tells her to remind me to be careful, to take care of myself and not to work or play so hard! I’ll miss her smile, her funny laugh, her compassion, her “no my guy”, and more. I’m thankful her pain is gone and that she’s now resting in peace. She will forever alive in my memories!
